Network Now Before You Enter the Workforce!

Start networking professionally before you enter the workforce! Your efforts will pay off if you focus on learning as much as you can about professional networks now. Below is a list of questions you can ask yourself to help start reframing your perceptions about social networks. Unlike informal social networking, your success as a professional will rely on your online personae.

  1. What is your future profession?
  2. Do you know anyone connected to that industry?
  3. Do you know anyone working in that industry?
  4. Do you have a mentor?
  5. Who could be your mentor?
  6. What are the professions of everyone in your family?
  7. Have you started connecting with the people above people on Facebook?
  8. Anywhere else?
  9. Do you currently have a social network?
  10. What changes will you make to improve it?
  11. Are you on http://www.linkedin.com/?
  12. Are you part of any other professional network?
  13. What will you join?
  14. Google yourself, what do you find?
  15. What is your current internet visibility?
  16. How visible do you want to be?
  17. Have you talked to your parents/grandparents about life before internet/cell phones?
  18. What do you know?
  19. Have you ever been recommended by a friend, friend of a friend, or family member?
  20. How did it go?
  21. Do you have a blog?
  22. How can you use it to your advantage professionally?
  23. Do you have more than 100 ‘friends’?
  24. Have you checked your privacy settings?
  25. Do you have any information about you that can be ‘perceived’ the wrong way?
  26. Does this information show up in Google searches? On Facebook?
  27. What can you do to delete/correct it?
  28. What privacy settings do you want to employ?
  29. What personae do you want your future employers to see?
  30. What do you want your future bosses to know?
  31. What are your resistances to social networking? Be honest.
